What is A Day in the Death of Joe Egg about?

Bri and Sheila have been having a difficult time raising and caring for 10-year-old disabled daughter Josephine, whom they've nicknamed Joe Egg. The two have resorted to escapism to cope with the struggles they've faced since Joe Egg was born, employing humour where possible and playing fantasy games to take their minds off reality.

But when Sheila joins an amateur theatre club as a new means to destress, Bri becomes increasingly annoyed and begins falsely assuming that she is having an affair while he is stuck at home to care for Joe Egg. Will he succumb to his paranoia and do something crazy?

Set in the 1960s, Joe Egg was a provocative play when it was released and it continues to resonate with modern audiences to this day, all thanks to the show's bittersweet comedic moments and relatable issues commonly faced in parenthood. Widely considered to be groundbreaking, A Day in the Death of Joe Egg is a brutally honest, black comedy that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

Joe Egg is directed by Simon Evans (Killer Joe) and stars esteemed English actor Toby Stephens in the role Bri, the worrisome teacher and father of Josephine. Stephens is well known for being the son of Dame Maggie Smith (Harry Potter series, Downton Abbey) and Sir Robert Stephens. The multi-award-winning actor was last seen on the West End stage in 2017 when he starred in a production of Oslo at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London. He has starred in the lead role for a number of RSC productions, of which he has won two Ian Charleson Awards: one for Best Classical Actor Under 30 for his portrayal of Coriolanus and one second-prize award for his portrayal of Bertram in All's Well That Ends Well. Stephens won a Theatre World Award for his Broadway debut in Ring Round the Moon, in which he played Hugo/Frederick, and has also earned a Sir John Gielgud Award again for his portrayal of Coriolanus with Royal Shakespeare Company.

Stephens is also highly prolific both on both the silver and small screens. His most notable film credit is likely his Saturn Award-nominated performance as Gustav Graves in the 2002 James Bond film Die Another Day, in which he starred alongside Pierce Brosnan as Agent 007, Halle Berry as Jinx, and Madonna as fencing instructor Verity. Notable TV credits of Stephens' include his roles as James McGraw/Flint in Black Sails, John Robinson in the Netflix remake series of Lost In Space, and Mr. Rochester in BBC's Jane Eyre.

Claire Skinner is a multi-award-winning and Olivier Award-nominated actress perhaps best known for her role as Sue Brockman on BBC's Outnumbered. Last seen in the West End in 2010's Deathtrap at the Noel Coward Theatre, Skinner's other notable theatre credits include her Olivier-nominated performance in 1995's The Glass Menagerie at the Comedy Theatre (now the Harold Pinter Theatre), Measure for Measure for the RSCThe Importance of Being Earnest (1993), The Father by Florian Zeller at the Tricycle Theatre, Harold Pinter's Moonlight (1993), Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale, and Blurred Lines at the National Theatre.
