Top 5 Reasons to see Caroline, or Change

Olivier Award-winning musical, Caroline, Or Change made its West End transfer to the Playhouse Theatre back in November after successful runs in Chichester and Hampstead. This hit musical is booking until 6 April 2019 and has already accumulated a mass of five-star reviews and praise. Here we’ve compiled five reasons on why it really is that good.

Top 5 Reasons to see Caroline, or Change
Last chance to see Caroline, or Change. The show must end 2 March 2019.

    A mesmerising musical score

It takes tremendous talent to write such a gripping score but only someone of true star quality can blend opera, gospel, Motown and blues and make it sound like the magnificent musical score that we are blown away by when watching Caroline, Or Change. For a musical almost completely in verse, the music plays possibly the biggest role, being the foundation that enables all the other elements to succeed. The score sets the tone for the musical and controls how the audience reacts to the story, and the music from Tony Award-winning composer and arranger Jeanine Tesori ensures this musical makes an impact.

    The sublime Sharon D. Clarke

Sharon D. Clarke has stormed Chichester and Hampstead before making her way to the West End and earning herself well deserved high praise and rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. It’s no wonder why, when you are graced with her heart-gripping performance, her acting is astonishingly authentic and her voice is a force to be reckoned with, her control making it as powerful as it is soft and vulnerable. She can change a mood effortlessly and portray the torment and emotions of her character seemingly with little ease.

A heartfelt story from a musical filled with morals

American playwright and screenwriter Tony Kushner, best known for play Angels in America, brings us a story based loosely on his own life. It's a provocative tale as you watch the despair of Caroline, struggling to support her family, and Noah, a young boy stricken with grief after the loss of his mother. Caroline fights with her frustrations with oppression, both class and race, and loneliness; her pain and anguish evoking emotion in the audience as you witness her hardships.

Already boasting a number of five-star reviews

You should always try to have an open mind when going to see a musical you haven’t seen before and you should take what critics say with a pinch of salt. However, that being said, when they’re all saying the same thing, boasting about cast and creatives alike and awarding five stars, then that’s not something worth turning a blind eye to. If everyone loves this musical, especially those with the most notability (five stars coming from the likes of the Evening Standard, The Telegraph Times, just to name a few), then surely that must pique your curiosity.

    An all-around strong cast

Now, the star of the show certainly does command the stage and manages to lead the rest of the cast to triumphant applause each and every night, but each individual actor does happen to shine brightly on their own accord. No matter how good a star may be, a show can’t be deemed a success without the accompaniment of an all-around talented cast. With the varying styles of music, from opera to blues, comes a need for wide vocal ranges, as demonstrated by Abiona Omonua when singing “I Hate The Bus.”

All the voices are strong and effortlessly ooze talent, and they each demand the spotlight; the younger actors even more so, which is a pleasant surprise considering their age. Of course, with any young character, the actor will vary, but there’s definitely a rising star in Jack Meredith who plays the griefing Noah. There are so many star-quality elements to this musical and this cast full of shining stars sure steal the spotlight.
