Sharon D. Clarke has stormed Chichester and Hampstead before making her way to the West End and earning herself well deserved high praise and rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. It’s no wonder why, when you are graced with her heart-gripping performance, her acting is astonishingly authentic and her voice is a force to be reckoned with, her control making it as powerful as it is soft and vulnerable. She can change a mood effortlessly and portray the torment and emotions of her character seemingly with little ease.

A heartfelt story from a musical filled with morals

American playwright and screenwriter Tony Kushner, best known for play Angels in America, brings us a story based loosely on his own life. It's a provocative tale as you watch the despair of Caroline, struggling to support her family, and Noah, a young boy stricken with grief after the loss of his mother. Caroline fights with her frustrations with oppression, both class and race, and loneliness; her pain and anguish evoking emotion in the audience as you witness her hardships.

With the varying styles of music, from opera to blues, comes a need for wide vocal ranges, as demonstrated by Abiona Omonua when singing “I Hate The Bus.” 

All the voices are strong and effortlessly ooze talent, and they each demand the spotlight; the younger actors even more so, which is a pleasant surprise considering their age. Of course, with any young character, the actor will vary, but there’s definitely a rising star in Jack Meredith who plays the griefing Noah. There are so many star-quality elements to this musical and this cast full of shining stars sure steal the spotlight.
