Olivier Awards to rename Best Director award after Sir Peter Hall

Following a faux pas at the 2018 Oliver Awards where Sir Peter Hall was inexcusably omitted from the In Memoriam segment despite having passed away last September, the Society of London Theatre (SOLT) announces that they will be renaming the honour for Best Director after the late director.

Sir Peter Hall is known as the founder of the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) and the former director of the National Theatre. His contribution to the arts is undeniable and the oversight at this year's Olivier Awards caused utter outrage. SOLT has expressed their sincerest apologies and decided on the name change to give Sir Peter Hall the recognition he rightfully deserves.

SOLT has also stated that they will be reviewing the process for selecting candidates for future In Memoriam segments.

The permanent name change for the Best Director award will take effect at the 2019 Olivier Awards.

Sir Peter Hall's Royal Shakespeare Company is currently running Matilda: The Musical at the Cambridge Theatre until 10 February 2019. The RSC is also set to run its two-part epic, Imperiumat the Gielgud Theatre this summer from 14 June 2018 until 8 September 2018.
