Making 'fetch' happen: Mean Girls producer hints at West End transfer

'They don't even go here!' Well, not yet they don't. Are The Plastics crossing over to the UK? Sonia Friedman, who serves as the producer for the Broadway adaptation, has hinted that a West End transfer of Mean Girls may be in the works.

Making 'fetch' happen: Mean Girls producer hints at West End transfer
The Broadway cast of Mean Girls dominate the stage.

The blockbuster musical is based on the 2004 comedy film of the same name, which starred Lindsay Lohan in her prime and was created by Saturday Night Live's Tina Fey. Riding off the film's huge success, the SNL actress adapted the film for the stage while her husband, Jeff Richmond, composed the music.

The Mean Girls musical officially opened last night on Broadway during the 2018 Olivier Awards. Friedman, who attended the awards ceremony, was asked about any plans to bring the show to the London stage, to which she replied, "Yeah, we'd love to... certainly, if I'm involved, it's going to happen, isn't it?"

Friedman recently took over the production from her colleague, Stuart Thompson, who had passed away just last year. She is known for producing Dreamgirls and Funny Girl.

Mean Girls incorporates many of the film's popular quotes and includes such songs as "Apex Predator," "Revenge Party," and "Meet the Plastics," all of which feature lyrics by Nell Benjamin. The Broadway production is directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw, who won a 2014 Olivier Award for his choreography in The Book of Mormon and an Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Choreographer for his work on Aladdin.

This is a developing story. Stay tuned.
