Jenna Russell to play Francesca Johnson in The Bridges of Madison County

On being cast in the role of Francesca Johnson, Russell stated that the Menier Chocolate Factory's Artistic Director David Babani had told her about The Bridges of Madison County musical a few years ago. But it wasn't until she met up with Babani last year in New York City when the two decided to take on the musical production, having told Babani that she couldn't stop thinking about it.

Jenna Russell, who claims to love Jason Robert Brown's music, expressed her excitement in trying a different form of singing than what she is accustomed to. The Bridges of Madison County marks her third return to the Menier Chocolate Factory and is 'like a home from home' for her. The actress also pointed out the venue's intimate theatre space, which she felt could help put the spotlight on the story's delicate subject matter.

The Bridges of Madison County musical synopsis

Marsha Norman and Robert Brown's musical was adapted from the bestselling Robert James Waller book of the same name. It is set in the 1960s and follows an Italian immigrant housewife named Francesca who lives happily with her family on a farm in Iowa. But when her family leaves for the weekend to attend the Iowa State Fair, she meets Robert Kincaid, a National Geographic photographer who is shooting pictures of covered bridges. A seemingly innocent friendship turns into an all-out affair, which reaps horrible consequences for both of them.

The original 1995 film starred Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood, who also directed.
