Don't miss the upcoming London premiere of Cormac McCarthy's acclaimed 2006 play, The Sunset Limited. The piece is set to run at the brand-new Art Deco venue, The Boulevard Theatre, following the closing of Dave Malloy's Ghost Quartet. Here's everything you need to know about the upcoming show penned by the same talented writer who brought you No Country For Old Men.
Is Sunset Boulevard back?
No, the London Palladium production of Sunset Boulevard starring Glenn Close is not returning to the West End... at least not anytime soon. This is The Sunset Limited, the 2006 Cormac McCarthy play that spawned the 2011 film of the same name with Tommy Lee Jones and Samuel L. Jackson. The play, as happenstance may have it, is receiving its London premiere at the Boulevard Theatre in Soho. Purely just a coinkydink for fans of crazed fictional movie star Norma Desmond!
Who is starring in The Sunset Limited at the Boulevard Theatre?
The London premiere of The Sunset Limited will star Gary Beadle (The Treatment) in the role of 'Black' while the role of 'White' will be portrayed by Richard II actor Jasper Britton, whose father — legend Tony Britton — recently passed away at the age of 95.
The Sunset Limited Boulevard Theatre creative team
The London production of The Sunset Limited will be directed by Olivier and Tony Award-winning director Terry Johnson (Mrs Henderson Presents, The Graduate, La Cage aux Folles) and it features design by Tim Shortall, lighting design by Ben Ormerod, sound design by John Leonard, and casting by Suzanne Crowley and Gilly Poole.
The play is written by multi-award-winning playwright and author Cormac McCarthy, who is otherwise perhaps best known for his western crime thriller novel, No Country For Old Men, which was adapted into an Academy Award-winning film. Other notable works of McCarthy's include All The Pretty Horses and The Road.
What is The Sunset Limited play about?
Set in New York City, The Sunset Limited plot — in a nutshell — centres on two men who have a chance encounter on a subway platform and begin to ask each other existential questions about humanity. While they seem to have irreconcilable differences in opinion, the answers they seek could spell disaster. Johnson's brilliant play explores themes of freedom, faith, and the path to redemption.
When is The Sunset Limited on at the Boulevard Theatre?
The Sunset Boulevard opens for previews on 16 January 2020 and will hold its official opening night on 21 January 2020. It is booking until 29 February.
