    What is Leopoldstadt about?

Tom Stoppard's play Leopoldstadt is set in Vienna, which was regarded as Europe's most lively and vibrant city back in 1900. It was a city filled to the brim with an intellectual class, creative class of artists, and amenities for enjoying life. One-tenth of the Viennese were Jews and just a generation before 1900, Jews were granted full civil rights by Franz Josef, Emperor of the Austrian Empire. Incidentally, thousands upon thousands of Jews fled from the Russian Pale and the pogroms in the East. Many Jews found sanctuary in various overcrowded tenements in Leopoldstadt - the old Jewish district. The Leopoldstadt play itself is Tom Stoppard's most personal one to date.
