Witness for the Prosecution is certainly a play that sells itself and is something that will be spread via word of mouth because there is not one person that left the courtroom (yes, actual courtroom) that wasn’t absolutely thrilled by the outstanding production they had just seen. If you’re on the look out for a play that’s a little different then this will certainly peak your interest. Being set in County Hall’s actual courtroom truly sets this play up to be unforgettable and is the perfect way to have you feeling completely immersed.
Before you’ve even taken your seat in the beautiful old courtroom, you know you’re highly likely to enjoy this play, as the story comes from legendary author Agatha Christie, who is practically the queen of detective and crime novels. Also, who doesn’t love a good murder mystery? Even with such an obviously great platform, this production only uses it as a stepping stone to a great show.
So far, we have the most fitting set you could wish for and an incredible story which creates the best jumping board for this great cast to jump off. On the stand we have the ever so loveable Leonard Vole, brought to life by Harry Reid. Reid is completely the perfect choice for this leading role, who captures the entire audience, and makes them all root for him. He’s everything you’d hope for from this role and then some, truly remarkable and even more so not to be overshadowed by the wisdom and talent that comes from Richard Clothier who plays the defence barrister. This cast, whilst their experience varies, create an outstanding ensemble and truly bring this production to life.
Last but certainly not least come the incredible talents of lighting designer, Chris Davey, and sound designer, Mic Pool. Yes, all the main aspects of this production are all top of its league, but it wouldn’t have had the same heart racing effect on you without the carefully timed and paced sound effects and the lighting that created multiple layers and amplified the dramatics of this play.
This play will have you completely hooked, your eyes unable to tear away, and your mind unwilling to drift elsewhere. You’ll be telling all your friends and family to go and see it (even if it’s just an excuse for you to go back and see it again). I assure you, you won’t want to miss out on this remarkable theatre experience.
Witness for the Prosecution is playing at London County Hall through the end of March 2019. Book your tickets here.
