Ticket Tuesday winner Becky Dixon reviews Forbidden Broadway

Ticket Tuesday winner Becky Dixon saw the current West End revival of long-running off-Broadway cult hit Forbidden Broadway.  The ever-developing cabaret revue lovingly lampoons 28 musical juggernauts as well as a host of famous theatre-related stars.

Here are Becky's thoughts on the show, currently playing at the Vaudeville Theatre

I'd heard a lot about this show. Chiefly among these was, 'you're not stagey enough. You won't get it.'

Well I got it. And I loved it.

Not just me, either. I took my grandmother - who is 70, only has the same theatre experience as I do, and in love with London. And as she has said to me many times tonight, she was 'intoxicated with laughter.'  Not wine. She swears.

Forbidden Broadway is fast. In all senses of the word. Fast paced, the sketches run at a break neck laugh a minute pace. Fast witted, not even this years Miss Saigon revival is safe from the acid wit. And fast passing. Before you know it it's over, and you've laughed and cheered and chuckled your way through the 2 hours (plus 20 minutes intermission time) traffic of the stage.

The only cast member I was aware of before tonight was Christina Bianco, from the YouTube videos that went viral not so long ago. That in itself is a tragedy, as each cast member was hilariously funny and phenomenally talented. Of course as is natural for a comedy sketch show, some sketches hit more than others, but nothing here is a miss.

The biggest hit, in my opinion, is the long, vicious Les Mis send up. From the rotating stage, through to mega ballad On My Own no target is safe. This particular skit, one of the longest in the show too, never outstays it's welcome and had me and those around me in total stitches of laughter.

Forbidden Broadway is a sharp tongued, hugely funny smash hit, and I would recommend it to anyone with even the most casual love of the theatre. As my grandmother said 'forbidden broadway, you're fabulous.'

    5 stars

    Thanks Becky!
