Q&A with Kinky Boots star Simon-Anthony Rhoden

Kinky Boots is striding with pride into its third year in the West End. After scooping up awards both here and on Broadway, the show tells the true story of a Northampton shoe factory that goes from making unfashionable brown shoes to producing ‘two and a half feet of irresistible sex,’ Having previously understudied Matt Henry in the same role, Simon-Anthony Rhoden is currently appearing as Lola in Kinky Boots at the Adelphi Theatre on The Strand.

How was it stepping into Olivier Award winning Matt Henry’s heels?
It was one of the most overwhelming things I think I've ever had to do. Not only is the role a mammoth one, but it's a show that has won so many major awards. I was terrified!

Did you have any difficulties adjusting to the heels? Were there any ‘Bambi’ moments?
To this day I'm convinced I will have a huge fall at some point in the show. As for learning how to walk in heels, just like anything, it takes practice and determination. I also have physio twice a week which helps!

Lola is, on the one hand, fearless, fun and fabulous. Is it liberating to play such a character?
I cannot describe how honoured I am to play this role and to tell this story. Lola is my alter ego and I'm so happy I get to live it each day.

Do you think there is a little bit of Lola in everyone?
There really and truly is a little Lola in everyone. Lola is the true representation of what it means to be yourself. Watching the show, I hope people go away feeling more comfortable with who they are, and as long as it doesn't cause harm to anyone else, try to be the best version of themselves that they can be.

Which part of yourself do you identify with in Lola?
As well as being colourful and fabulous, Lola is an upfront and frank person and I identify with that a lot, honesty is the best policy.

Kinky Boots marked your West End debut. What’s it been like being part of one of the hottest tickets in town?
As I've mentioned, it is such an honour to play this role. I have been acting for a very long time now and finally getting this role in a show like this has honestly been a dream come true.

What is your personal highlight of the show?
The introduction of Lola has always been my favourite part of the show, so getting to perform 'Land of Lola' night after night is definitely a highlight for me.

Lola’s clothes and boots reflect her personality. If you could design your own boots to reflect yours, what would they look like?
RED thigh high 6 inch high heeled kinky boots!!!!!
