Matilda the Musical among top nominations for Broadway's Tony Awards!

The Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Theatre, or more popularly referred to as the Tony Award, recognizes achievement in live Broadway theatre. This year, the Tony Awards will be presented on the 9th of June, at the Radio City Music Hall in New York.

Leading the nominations is Kinky Boots, a musical adaptation of the British film of the same name that may enter the West End in the next few months. It has received 13 nods, including the musical lighting design category and best book category.

Matilda the Musical, the heartwarming musical adaptation of Roald Dahl's well-known novel, is quickly gaining on Kinky Boots, with 12 nominations. Among those are Best Musical Actor nomination for Bertie Carvel, Best Musical, Choreography, and Best Lyrics and Song by Tim Minchin.

The production debuted in the West End at the Cambridge Theatre in 2011 to great critical acclaim and box-office popularity.  It had won 7 Olivier Awards in 2012, most notable of which was Best New Musical.  It is currently booking at the Cambridge Theatre until 25 May 2014.

Some other prominent musicals shortlisted for nominations in the prestigious Tony Awards are Pippin, Golden Boy, Lucky Guy or Bring It On: the Musical.
