Great Britain Set For West End Transfer

Nicholas Hytner's production of Richard Bean's Great Britain is set to transfer to the Theatre Royal Haymarket following a successful National Theatre run from 10 September, 2014 to 10 January, 2015. Booking for the show opened on the 4th of July.

Richard Bean's play, an anarchic and foul-mouthed satire about the press, the police, and the political establishment barrels ahead, fast-paced and furious. It follows Paige Britain, an ambitious young news editor for The Free Press, a tabloid newspaper that is forever battling to attract new readers, whatever the cost.

One Man, Two Guvnors, also by Richard Bean and also directed by Nicholas Hytner for its National Theatre run won several prestigious awards such as the Evening Standard and Critics' Circle Awards for Best New Play. It is currently on its third UK tour, following its smash runs at the National Theatre, The West End, and across the pond on Broadway. Recently Bean also wrote the book for the new West End musical Made in Dagenham.

Since he became Director of the National in April 2003, Nicholas Hytner has directed Henry V, His Dark Materials, The History Boys, Stuff Happens, Henry IV, Southwark Fair, The Alchemist, The Man of Mode, The Rose Tattoo (with Steven Pimlott), Rafta, Rafta… , Much Ado About Nothing, Major Barbara, England People Very Nice, Phèdre, The Habit of Art, London Assurance, Hamlet, Collaborators, Travelling Light, One Man Two Guvnors, Timon of Athens, People, Cocktail Sticks, Othello and Live from the National Theatre: 50 Years on Stage.

Great Britain received its world premiere at the National Theatre earlier this month.

    Great Britain Reviews:

    Evening standard

‘The most detailed stage satire I have ever seen – closely in tune with its subject matter and its times.’
    Financial Times

    ‘Laughter-making on an industrial scale.’
    Independent
