Brit-done-good Kate Winslet is gearing up to finally make her stage debut according to the Daily Mail. Surprisingly the Hollywood actress has never played in the West End or on Broadway but her love of 1996 Tony Award-nominated play Skylight may just be the play to lure her away from the big screen.
The planned upcoming production is to be directed by the play's author David Hare, and would feature Love, Actually star Bill Nighy opposite Winslet. The London-set play tells the tale of restaurant owner Tom who meets his former mistress Kyra after his wife's death. The piece was nominated for four Tony Awards when it first opened on Broadway at the Royale Theatre including best play. It starred Michael Gambon, Lia Williams and Christian Carmago. Winslet is said to be 'in love' with the play and has been liaising with Hare for some time about starring in a production of it. As yet there is no confirmation whether the show would open in the West End or on Broadway, however if it is the latter a London transfer would seem likely.
Kate Winslet is best known for her portrayal of Rose opposite Leonardo DiCaprio's Jack in 1997's emotive Titanic, which at the time was the world's highest-ever grossing film. She is the youngest person to receive six Academy Award nominations and won a best actress Oscar in 2008 for The Reader. Other film credits include Sense And Sensibility, Iris, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Finding Neverland, The Holiday and recent hit Contagion. Her performance in 2011's American mini-series Mildred Pierce for the HBO network earned her Emmy, Golden Globe and SAG awards. Nighy has already played the role of Tom in Skylight opposite Stella Gonet when the show returned to the West End at the Vaudeville Theatre in 1997.
