8 Aladdin Quotes We Hope Made It Into The Musical

You may know there’s a new musical making its way to London’s West End - and there’s something familiar about it… Disney’s Aladdin touches down at the Prince Edward Theatre in June, after proving a hit on Broadway. The show revives the story we know and love from the 1992 film version, about a ‘diamond in the rough’, who, with the help of a magical wish-granting genie, finds love with a princess.

But transferring a much-loved movie to the stage brings with it a certain pressure. We already know that a few musical numbers have been added, and that a couple of the characters are different - but how many of our favourite lines from the movie have made it into the show? Here are a few Aladdin quotes we hope have made the cut.

There are some great quotes in Aladdin about the importance of looking beyond appearances. Like this one, from Aladdin himself:

“If only they'd look closer. Would they see a poor boy? No, siree! They'd find out there's so much more to me.”

And these words of wisdom about the Genie’s lamp (and much more), from the merchant who introduces Aladdin’s story:

“Do not be fooled by its commonplace appearance. Like so many things, it is not what is outside, but what is inside that counts.”

One of the best things about Aladdin is the story’s heroine, who knows what she wants in life, even if it means leaving behind everything she knows. Here’s one of Jasmine’s quotes about love and marriage:

“If I do marry, I want it to be for love.”

The next one might be a quote from Jafar, the bad guy, but it’s still great advice for life - even if you’re not locked in a prison cell with only your pet monkey for company:

“You’re only a fool if you give up.”

Who can forget the hilarious genie, played by Robin Williams? He gets some of the best lines in the movie, but they’re not all intended to make us laugh. This quote from the genie, in a rare moment of seriousness, reveals his longing for freedom:

“But, oh, to be free! … To be my own master. Such a thing would be greater than all the magic and all the treasures in all the world!”

And here’s another lovely genie quote, as the two friends say an emotional farewell. Again, these words remind us how important it is to look at who someone is on the inside, instead of judging by what you see.

“No matter what anybody says... you'll always be a prince to me.”

Finally, it would be impossible to write a post about Aladdin quotes without mentioning its best-known song. So here are a couple of my favourite lyrics from Aladdin and Jasmine’s love song, 'A Whole New World', one of the most magical moments in the movie.

“Tell me, princess, now when did you last let your heart decide?”

“I'm like a shooting star, I've come so far, I can't go back to where I used to be…”

I don’t know about you, but I’m looking forward to seeing the magic carpet take flight!
