Sue Johnston is set to join the cast of The Man in the White Suit, a new play based on the classic 1950s Ealing film of the same name. The beloved actress will originate the role alongside the previously announced Kara Tointon and Stephen Mangan. Her limited engagement begins with the world premiere at the Theatre Royal Bath and extends into the first 9-weeks of the West End run at London’s Wyndham’s Theatre which begins previews 26 September.

Sue Johnston has been announced for a strictly limited engagement in The Man in the White Suit. The actress will join the production for the Theatre Royal Bath run ahead of the transfer to the West End’s Wyndham’s Theatre. Johnston is set to play the role of Mrs Watson for the first 9-weeks of the West End run, beginning with previews 26 September and ending her commitment 23 November.
Sue Johnston is a British Comedy Award winner, BAFTA nominee and OBE. She rose to fame as a television actress and is known for her roles in series such as Brookside and The Royle Family. She would go on to play roles such as Dr Grace Foley in the Emmy award-winning BBC phenomenon Waking the Dead. Her portrayal of Miss Denker, the crafty lady’s maid to Dame Maggie Smith’s Dowager Countess on ITV’s international powerhouse Downton Abbey, would win her a SAG award with the cast for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in Drama Series.
Recently the actress has played the leading role of Ivy-Rae in the BBC drama Age Before Beauty. She has also appeared Death on the Tyne and Hold The Sunset. The actress is set to beginning filming for the new comedy The Cockfields. Though Johnston became a household name through her small-screen roles, she is also a prolific stage actress. Her stage credits include Small Change at the Donmar Warehouse, The Master Builder alongside Patrick Stewart and Kenneth Branagh’s The Play What I Wrote at Wyndham’s Theatre.
The actress joins the cast which is set to star Stephen Mangan and Kara Tointon in the leading roles. Best known for her longstanding role on EastEnders, Kara Tointon is set to portray Daphne Birnley. The winner of the 2010 series of Strictly Come Dancing also appeared in the ITV live production of The Sound of Music. She also starred in the Garrick Theatre’s 2011 production of Pygmalion.
Mangan who will star as Sidney Stratton is best known for his role on television’s Green Wing. The actor most recently appeared in The Birthday Party with Pearl Mackie, Toby Jones, and Zoë Wanamaker. His most prestigious stage credits include his Tony Award Nominated role in The Norman Conquests and his starring role in the Olivier Award-winning production Jeeves and Wooster in Perfect Nonsense at Duke of York's Theatre.
What is The Man in the White Suit about?
This new comedy is based on the 1950s classic Ealing comedy of the same name which starred Joan Greenwood and Alec Guinness. In The Man in the White Suit, research chemist Sidney Stratton (Stephen Mangan) invents a fabric. But this isn’t just any fabric; this is a fabric that never gets dirty, never wears and never fades. This seemingly indestructible cloth creates the most unlikely of bedfellows. Manufacturers and trades unions come together in a bid to protect their industry and their jobs.
