Olivier Award-winner Sally Cookson’s compelling reimagining of Peter Pan by J M Barrie is set to open in a new venue later this summer at the Troubadour White City Theatre. The National Theatre’s magical retelling of this classic fairy tale will give you all the faith and trust you need this summer for an awfully big adventure. Get your pixie dust and your tickets for when everyone’s favourite lost boy flies into West London, performances beginning 20 July.

The National Theatre’s Peter Pan gets a West London transfer
Everyone has a special place in their heart for the boy who never grows up and this inventive production continues that legacy, having devised a show for audiences of all ages. The brilliant Sally Cookson has taken J M Barrie’s widely loved family story and has given it a whole new lease of life. This production was first seen in the prestigious Bristol Old Vic before being reconceived at the National Theatre in 2016. This summer will see its West London transfer into the new theatre, Troubadour White City Theatre.
The Troubadour White City Theatre is going to open at White City Place which was formerly home to the BBC Media Village in West London. The venue will come with two theatre spaces, one of which is a fully flexible theatre with a 1200 capacity and the other will be a multi-purpose state of the art theatre with 800 seats.
What is different about this Peter Pan retelling?
All children grow up. All except one. Peter Pan, the leader of the Lost Boys, loses his shadow during a visit to his favourite house in London. The storytelling Wendy helps him to reattach it and after learning Wendy is to grow up, Peter invites her to Neverland. Along with her brothers, John and Michael, Peter and Wendy, and Tinkerbell the fairy, fly to Neverland where Lost Boys, mermaids, Tiger Lily, and a vengeful Captain Hook await.
We all know the story of Peter Pan and the National Theatre’s production brings this to life and features innovative aerial acrobats and live music from the on-stage band. This inventive retelling is bursting at the seams with music, magic, mischief and make-believe. It’s funny and imaginative and definitely not what you’ll expect but at the heart, it’s still the heart-warming beloved story that is much-loved by so many.
Sally Cookson and the creative team behind Peter Pan
Peter Pan is a National Theatre co-production with Bristol Old Vic. With these respected theatres behind this production, there’s no wonder that it comes with an incredible creative team.
Sally Cookson, director, trained at LAMDA and worked as an actor for ten years before becoming a freelance director. Her theatre credits highlight her passion for classic stories and particularly those that are more magical. Her directing credits include The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (West Yorkshire Playhouse), Jane Eyre and Peter Pan (Bristol Old Vic/National Theatre). She is an associate artist at Bristol Old Vic where her productions include Sleeping Beauty, Treasure Island, The Boy Who Cried Wolf and Strange Case. She has made numerous collaborations with Travelling Light theatre which include Strictly Balti, The Ugly Duckling and Shadowplay. Her other theatre credits include Olivier Award-nominated productions Cinderella – A Fairytale and Hetty Feather.
The creative team behind Peter Pan sees design by Michael Vale, costume design by Katie Sykes, dramaturgy by Mike Akers, lighting design by Aideen Malone and sound design by Dominic Bilkey. The production features original music by Benji Bower, and movement direction by Dan Canham, puppetry design and direction by Toby Olié and aerial direction by Gwen Hales. Casting is by Sam Stevenson.
