The master of American contemporary dance, Mark Morris has become the benchmark of creativity for a generation of dancers, choreographers and audiences. Morris has created dances for more than thirty years, which have ranged from the austere to the joyful, able to switch between the deeply moving to the downright silly. Celebrated by critics for his inventive and imaginative choreography, Mark Morris returns to Sadler’s Wells with a total of seven works never before seen in the UK, divided into two unmissable programmes.
"As a choreographer Mark Morris is some sort of genius, as a performer he is a star and as a showcase, his company is one of America’s most viable dance exports" - The Independent
Programme A includes The Muir, an evolution of the graceful yet powerful Cease Your Funning, while Socrates features Erik Satie’s eponymous score – a three part drama which continues Mark Morris’ commitment to live music in performance. The programme is completed by the new ensemble work Crosswalk.
"There is no other dance company so at one with its choreography and its music" - Financial Times
The selection for Programme B features the “charming, exhilarating” (New York Observer) Festival Dance, the recently unveiled duet Jenn and Spencer, the piano-accompanied sextet, Excursions, and A Wooden Tree, set to recordings by the Scottish poet Ivor Cutler.
