A former dancer with William Forsythe’s Ballett Frankfurt, Sadler's Wells' newest Associate Artist Crystal Pite was the youngest person ever to receive the Clifford E. Lee Choreographic Award in 1995, and has since gone on to create work for Nederlands Dans Theater, National Ballet of Canada and Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet.
“Pite is an image maker of rare distinction”The Australian
For its first visit to Sadler’s Wells since debuting in 2009, Pite’s Kidd Pivotcompany presents its latest work, The Tempest Replica. Based on motifs from Shakespeare’s The Tempest, Pite stages a game of revenge and forgiveness; reality and imagination, exploring these themes in two contexts.
Firstly, represented as an on-stage storyboard, with the plot points of the narrative delivered minimally through the gestures and postures of faceless chalk-white figures inside a maquette-like space. Secondly, the narrative is explored through a series of portraits – the characters and relationships manifested through fierce physical language and emotion, to produce a work of rare insight and innovation.
“Pite brings a refined lyricism which transforms everything she touches”
