What's closing in London Theatre this month? (May 2019)

Posted on | By Jade Ali

Sadly, another new month means the doors will be closing on some wonderful shows in London. Fortunately, there’s still time if you haven’t managed to catch some of these fantastic productions or if you just desperately need another viewing (because sometimes once, twice or ten times isn’t enough). The year is simply flying by and it seems some of these shows just opened, but limited runs are just that, limited, and you have to act quickly if you want to squeeze them in. Here are some productions we think you need to make time for…

All About Eve (closes 11 May)
Ivo Van Hove’s adaptation of All About Eve is playing at the Noel Coward Theatre until just 11 May and it’s one you simply cannot miss! With both a Tony Award-winning director and being based on an Academy Award-winning film, the West End has been lapping up this play and even more so because of the star-studded cast including Gillian Anderson and Lily James. Margo Channing (Anderson) is an ageing but prominent Broadway star and Eve Harrington (James) appears as a helpful young fan but after inserting herself into Channing’s life, proves to be a threat to both her career and personal life. This limited run is swiftly coming to an end but thankfully there’s still time so be sure to book the last few tickets whilst you can!

Follies (closes 11 May)
The 2017 revival of Follies was nominated for nine Olivier Awards and after having won Best Musical Revival and Best Costume Design, as well as having had a sell-out run, it returned to London’s National Theatre, for what has been another very in demand run. The story of Follies takes us back to 1971 and set in a historical Broadway Theatre, in which a bustling party is occurring. The Weismann Theatre is set to be demolished the day after but not before past performers party on the stage, sing some tunes and reminisce about good times. This award-winning musical by renowned composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim (Company, West Side Story) is once again being raved about and you definitely need to go see what all the fuss is about.

Little Miss Sunshine (closes 11 May)
This sunny new musical comedy is based on the 2006 Academy Award-winning film. Olive, the youngest member of the Hoover family, has her heart set on winning a beauty contest that shares a name with the title of this new production. The story follows Olive and her supportive family and their road trip in a rickety, old, yellow camper van, from Arizona to sunny California. This journey not only puts their old camper van to the test but their family bond! Little Miss Sunshine comes from multi-Tony Award-winning duo James Lapine (Into the Woods) and William Finn (Falsettos) and has had an incredible journey at the Arcola Theatre thus far. Be sure you get a ticket before the Hoover family reach the end of the road. However, if you don’t catch this run of Little Miss Sunshine, the road trip will find itself in Bromley at the Churchill Theatre for four performances starting 16 May 2019!

INALA (closes 18 May)
This Grammy Award-nominated production has had sell-out runs at Sadler’s Wells and Edinburgh Playhouse plus a regional tour and an international premiere. Limited to just a 3-week run, it’s one you’ll definitely want to be sure you catch before it embarks on another international tour. Current and former dancers from both the Royal Ballet and Rambert are joined by three-time Grammy Award-winning Soweto Gospel Choir. INALA will be taking its powerful mix of South African and Western cultures to the Peacock Theatre and celebrates diversity in this beautiful production. You’ll want to act fast to be sure you secure tickets for this show before it follows its streak of selling out.

Admissions (closes 25 May)
Joshua Harmon’s new hit Broadway show transferred to the West End’s Trafalgar Studios earlier this year. This new play was well received on Broadway and has created the same hype here in London, the story focusing on ideals of diversity making it very relevant in today’s society. The hypocrisy and contradictions are both outrageous and hilarious which is why this play is so brilliant and thought-provoking. Having already won awards over on Broadway, it’s not a surprise that Admissions has been such a success here too. This is definitely a play you’ll want to add a tick next to so get your tickets before the final bell rings!
