According to Disney, the new version of The Lion King made $22.1m (£14.3m). Moneyball opened at number 2 with $20.6m (£13.3m), while Dolphin Tale was close behind with $20.3m (£13.1m).
This means that the new version of The Lion King has already made $61.7m (£39.9m) since its release.
Head of Distribution at Disney, Dave Hollis, said the studio will leave the film in cinemas longer than its planned two-week run after the 3D version exceeded all expectations.
Tickets for Lion King musical at the Lyceum theatre, one of London's top family friendly shows, are currently available with no booking fees.
