Andrew Lloyd Webber explores the story of the Profumo affair on which his new musical STEPHEN WARD is based. In 1963, whilst Secretary of State for War, John Profumo’s affair with 19-year-old model Christine Keeler raised questions of national security, and caused a scandal that rocked the Conservative government and ultimately led to Profumo’s resignation. The composer meets people at the heart of the scandal, and looks at the role and sudden death of society osteopath Stephen Ward who had first introduced the pair.
Stephen Ward opens tonight at London's Aldwych Theatre.
